లైంగికహింసపై పోరాటానికి నోబెల్‌

 ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా యుద్ధాలు, అంతర్యుద్ధాలు జరుగుతున్న కల్లోలిత ప్రాంతాల్లో చోటుచేసుకుంటున్న లైంగిక హింసపై అలుపెరుగని పోరు జరుపుతున్న ఇద్దరికి ఈ ఏడాది నోబెల్‌ శాంతి పురస్కారం దక్కింది. కాంగోకు చెందిన వైద్యుడు డెనిస్‌ మక్వీజ్‌(63), ఇరాక్‌లోని యాజిది తెగకు చెందిన యువతి నదియా మురాద్‌(25)లు ఈ ప్రతిష్టాత్మక గౌరవం పొందారు. యుద్ధాల్లో లైంగిక హింసను ఒక ఆయుధంగా వాడుకోకుండా నిరోధించేందుకు ఈ ఇద్దరు ఎంతో పోరాడారని నోబెల్‌ ఎంపిక కమిటీ ప్రశంసించింది.

ఈ అవార్డుల ప్రకటనను అంతర్జాతీయ సమాజం, ఐక్యరాజ్య సమితి స్వాగతించాయి. ‘యుద్ధ సమయాల్లోనూ మహిళల హక్కులు, భద్రతను గుర్తించి కాపాడితేనే శాంతియుత ప్రపంచం సాకారమవుతుంది’ అని కమిటీ చైర్మన్‌  బెరిట్‌ రీస్‌ అండర్‌సన్‌ వ్యాఖ్యానించారు. యుద్ధాలు,సాయుధ దళాల సంఘర్షణల్లో లైంగిక హింస కట్టడికి పోరాడిన మక్వీజ్‌ జాతీయంగా, అంతర్జాతీయంగా పేరు గడించారని పేర్కొన్నారు. మక్వీజ్,మురాద్‌ తమ వ్యక్తిగత జీవితాలను పణంగా పెట్టి లైంగిక నేరాలపై పోరాడారని కొనియాడారు.

కాంగోలో యుద్ధ సమయాల్లో లైంగిక హింసకు గురైన మహిళలు శారీరక,మానసిక క్షోభ నుంచి కోలుకునేలా మక్వీజ్‌ గత రెండు దశాబ్దాలుగా సేవ చేస్తున్నారు. 1999లో తాను స్థాపించిన ఆసుపత్రిలో వేలాది మంది బాధితులకు చికిత్స అందించారు. ‘డాక్టర్‌ మిరాకిల్‌’గా పిలిచే మక్వీజ్‌..యుద్ధ సమయాల్లో మహిళలపై దాష్టీకాలను నిర్మొహమాటంగా ఖండించారు. 2014లో ఐఎస్‌ ఉగ్రవాదుల చేతిలో అపహరణకు గురైన మురాద్‌..మూడు నెలల తరువాత వారి చెర నుంచి తప్పించుకుంది. ఉగ్రవాదులు లైంగిక బానిసలుగా చేసుకున్న వేలాది మంది యాజిది మహిళలు, చిన్నారుల్లో మురాద్‌ కూడా ఒకరు. హాలీవుడ్‌ను కుదిపేసిన‘మీటూ’ ఉదంతం వెలుగు చూసి ఏడాది పూర్తవుతున్న సందర్భంగా లైంగిక నేరాలపై పోరాడి న వారికి నోబెల్‌ శాంతి బహుమతి దక్కడం విశేషం.  
 

వెల్లువెత్తిన అభినందనలు..
మక్వీజ్, మురాద్‌ల ధైర్య సాహసాలను యూరోపియన్‌ అధ్యక్షుడు డొనాల్డ్‌ టస్క్, జర్మనీ చాన్స్‌లర్‌ ఎంజెలా మెర్కెల్‌ కొనియాడారు. మక్వీజ్‌కు నోబెల్‌ దక్కిన వార్త వెలువడిన వెంటనే ఆయన ఆసుపత్రి ప్రాంగణంలో సంబరాలు మిన్నంటాయి. మురాద్‌కు నోబెల్‌ బహుమతి రావడం.. ఉగ్రవాదానికి వ్యతిరేకంగా పోరాడిన ఇరాక్‌ పౌరులందరికీ గర్వకారణమని ఆ దేశ అధ్యక్షుడు బర్హాం సలేహ్‌ అన్నారు. ఉగ్రవాదులకు ఇది చెంపపెట్టు అని,  లైంగిక హింసకు గురైన బాధితుల పట్ల ఇరాక్‌ ప్రభుత్వం మరింత దృష్టిసారిస్తుందని ఆశిస్తున్నట్లు యాజిది ఎంపీ ఒకరు వ్యాఖ్యానించారు. మురాద్, మక్వీజ్‌లు కాకుండా ఈ అవార్డుకు అర్హులు మరొకరు లేరని ఐరాస మానవహక్కుల హైకమిషనర్‌ మిచెల్‌ బ్యాచ్‌లెట్‌ కితాబిచ్చారు. మరోవైపు, కాంగో ప్రభుత్వం మక్వీజ్‌ను అభినందిస్తూనే,  ఆయన తన సేవలను రాజకీయం చేశారని విమర్శించింది.  

బాధితురాలే నాయకురాలై..
నోబెల్‌ శాంతి బహుమతిని అందుకున్న ఇరాక్‌కు చెందిన యాజిదీ యువతి మురాద్‌ నదియా (25)ది పోరాట గాథ. 2014లో ఇస్లామిక్‌ స్టేట్‌ ఉగ్రవాదులు ఉత్తర ఇరాక్‌లోని ఓ గ్రామంపై తెగబడ్డారు. మైనారిటీలైన కుర్దులుండే ఈ గ్రామంపై దాడిచేసి.. కనబడ్డ మగవారిని చంపేశారు. మహిళలు, చిన్నారులను ఎత్తుకెళ్లారు. వారిలో మురాద్‌ నదియా (25)ఒకరు. వీరిని తీసుకెళ్లిన ఐఎస్‌ ఉగ్రవాదులు మహిళలు, చిన్నారులని తేడా లేకుండా అందరిపై దారుణంగా, కిరాతకంగా వ్యవహరించారు. లైంగిక బానిసలుగా తమ వద్ద పెట్టుకుని దారుణమైన అకృత్యాలకు పాల్పడ్డారు.

మూడు నెలలపాటు వీరి అరాచకాలను భరించిన నదియా.. అతికష్టం మీద తప్పించుకున్నారు. ఐసిస్‌ నుంచి తప్పించుకుని శరణార్థుల శిబిరానికి చేరుకున్న తర్వాత.. ఆమె జీవితంలో రెండో ఇన్నింగ్స్‌ మొదలైంది. తన లాగా మరెవరూ ఈ కిరాతక కూపంలో ఉండకూడదని నిశ్చయించుకున్నారామె. శిబిరంలో బ్రిటీష్‌ లాయర్, హక్కుల కార్యకర్త అమల్‌ క్లూనీ పరిచయం ఆమె ఆశయానికి మరింత ప్రోత్సాహాన్నిచ్చింది. అదే.. యాజిదీలకు జరుగుతున్న అన్యాయం ప్రపంచానికి వివరించేలా చేసింది. ఐక్యరాజ్య సమితి వంటి వేదికలపై నదియా.. తన గళం విప్పే అవకాశాన్ని కల్పించింది. దీని ఫలితంగానే.. దాదాపు నాలుగున్నర లక్షల మంది బాధితులకు ఐసిస్‌ నరకకూపం నుంచి విముక్తి లభించింది.  
 

‘ద లాస్ట్‌ గర్ల్‌’
తన తోటి యాజిదీలు ఎదుర్కొంటున్న దయనీయ పరిస్థితుల గురించి‘ద లాస్ట్‌ గర్ల్‌’ పేరుతో నదియా ఒక పుస్తకాన్ని రాశారు. 2017లో ఈ పుస్తకం ఆవిష్కరించారు. ఈ పుస్తకానికి అమల్‌ క్లూనీ ముందుమాట రాసి మరోసారి నదియాకు మద్దతుగా నిలిచారు. ఇరాక్‌లో ఐసిస్‌ దురాగతాలను అరికట్టేందుకు చర్యలు తీసుకుంటామని ఐక్యరాజ్య సమితి భద్రతా మండలి ప్రకటించడం నదియా పోరాట ఫలితమే. ‘నాకు అప్పుడు 21 ఏళ్లు. 2014, జూలైలో నన్ను ఐసిస్‌ ఉగ్రవాదులు కిడ్నాప్‌ చేశారు. అడ్డొచ్చినందుకు అమ్మ, ఆరుగురు సోదరులను అత్యంత దారుణంగా హత్య చేశారు.

ఆ తర్వాత నాతో పాటు మేనకోడళ్లను కూడా లైంగిక బానిసలుగా మోసూల్‌ పట్టణంలో మాలాగే.. ఓ 30 మంది బాధితులు ఉన్న శిబిరంలో పడేశారు. రోజూ ఓ వంద మంది ఉగ్రవాదులు వచ్చేవారు. వారికి నచ్చిన వారిని ఎంపిక చేసుకుని రాక్షసానందం పొందేవారు. చిన్న పిల్లలైన నా మేనకోడళ్లపైనా ఆ దుర్మార్గులు కనికరం చూపలేదు. ఈ అకృత్యాలను తట్టుకోలేక ఓ రోజు వారికి ఎదురు తిరిగాను. దీంతో కోపోద్రిక్తుడైన ఐసిస్‌ నాయకుడొకడు నన్ను తీవ్రంగా హింసించాడు. మమ్మల్ని చంపేయని అడిగాను. కానీ వాడలా చేయలేదు. ఇలా హింసించడంలోనే ఆనందం ఉందన్నాడు. తట్టుకోలేక ఆత్మహత్య చేసుకోవాలనుకున్నాను’ అని ఐఎస్‌లో లైంగిక బందీగా ఉన్నప్పటి దారుణాలను నదియా వివరించారు.  
 

డాక్టర్‌ ‘మిరాకిల్‌’ మక్వీజ్‌
డెమొక్రటిక్‌ రిపబ్లిక్‌ ఆఫ్‌ కాంగో.. రాజకీయ హింస, అధికార, ప్రభుత్వ వ్యతిరేక దళాల మధ్య అంతర్యుద్ధంతో రావణకాష్టంలా మారింది. దశాబ్దాలుగా ఇది కొనసాగుతూనే ఉంది. ఈ యుద్ధం కారణంగా లెక్కలేనన్ని కుటుంబాలు అస్తిత్వాన్ని కోల్పోయాయి. ఇది చాలదన్నట్లు రెండు వర్గాలు మహిళలను తమ ఆయుధాలుగా వాడుకుంటున్నాయి. ఈ సంఘర్షణలో లెక్కలేనంత మంది మహిళలు లైంగిక హింసకు గురయ్యారు. అయితే.. లైంగిక హింస బాధితులను ఆదుకునేందుకు డాక్టర్‌ డెనిస్‌ మక్వీజ్‌ రెండు దశాబ్దాలుగా అలుపెరగని ప్రయత్నం చేస్తున్నారు.

1999లో దక్షిణ కివూలో పంజీ హాస్పిటల్‌ను స్థాపించి.. అత్యాచార బాధితులకు అండగా నిలిచారు. తన వద్దకు వచ్చే బాధితులను ఆదుకునేందుకు ఈ డాక్టర్‌ రోజుకు 18 గంటల పాటు పనిచేసిన సందర్భాలు లెక్కలేనన్ని. తిరుగుబాటుదారులు ఎంత క్రూరంగా అత్యాచారాలు చేసే వారంటే  కొందరు మహిళలకు ఒకటి కంటే ఎక్కువసార్లు శస్త్రచికిత్సలు నిర్వహించాల్సి వచ్చేది. కాంగో మహిళలకు మక్వీజ్‌ అందిస్తున్న సేవల గురించి ‘ద గ్లోబ్‌ అండ్‌ మెయిల్‌’ పత్రిక ద్వారా ప్రపంచానికి తెలిసింది.

అయితే.. తమ చేతుల్లో అత్యాచారానికి గురైన మహిళలకు డాక్టర్‌ అండగా నిలుస్తున్నాడనే కక్షతో ఉగ్రవాదులు ఆయన్ను హతమార్చడానికి ప్రయత్నించారు. 2012లో తన ఇంటిపై దాడి చేసినపుడు అక్కడి నుంచి తప్పించుకుని యూరోప్‌ వెళ్లారు. ఆయన లేని సమయంలో పంజీ ఆసుపత్రిలో శస్త్ర చికిత్సలు జరగక బాధిత మహిళలు తీవ్ర ఇబ్బందులకు గురయ్యారు. ఆరునెలల తర్వాత తిరిగి వచ్చిన మక్వీజ్‌కు బుకావ్‌ విమానాశ్రయం 21 మైళ్ల దూరమున్న పంజీ ఆసుపత్రి వరకు ప్రజలు.. ముఖ్యంగా మహిళలు స్వాగతం పలికారు.

యూరప్‌లో ఉన్న సమయంలోనే మక్వీజ్‌.. ఐరాస వేదికగా కాంగో మహిళలపై జరుగుతున్న అకృత్యాలను ప్రపంచానికి వెల్లడించారు.‘డాక్టర్‌ మిరాకిల్‌’గా సుపరిచితుడైన ఆయన.. మహిళలపై లైంగిక దాడిని‘భారీ విధ్వంసక ఆయుధం’గా అభివర్ణించారు. శాంతి బహుమతి ప్రకటన జరిగినపుడు కూడా ఆయన తన విధుల్లోనే (శస్త్రచికిత్స నిర్వహిస్తున్నారు) ఉన్నారు. అయితే నోబెల్‌ శాంతి బహుమతికి డాక్టర్‌ మక్వీజ్‌ ఆరుసార్లు నామినేట్‌ కావడం విశేషం.

Women were seen behind the wheels of cars and astride motorcycles — driving on the country’s streets for the first time in decades, following the Islamic kingdom’s decision to lift the world’s only ban on female drivers. 

Pedestrians cheered as women motorists drove by, and male drivers shouted words of support and offered thumbs-ups through car windows. Photos shared on social media showed Saudi police officers giving out flower bouquets and cards with words of encouragement emblazoned on them to women drivers.

Saina Nehwal clinched women’s singles gold in badminton.

Manika Batra wins gold in table tennis women's singles, becoming the first Indian woman to do so.

Vinesh Phogat wins gold in women’s wrestling freestyle 50 kg Nordic event.

M.C. Mary Kom won 45-48 kg category boxing event, claiming gold in her debut Commonwealth Games.

Saruhashi Woman scientist - Japan

Her groundbreaking research focused on acid rain, radioactivity spread through oceans, and CO2 levels in seawater.

As a female scientist working in the 1950s and 60s, Saruhashi broke many glass ceilings: She was the first woman to earn a PhD in chemistry from the University of Tokyo in 1957, the first woman elected to the Science Council of Japan in 1980, and the first woman to win the Miyake Prize for geochemistry in 1985, an award named after her mentor, Miyake Yasuo. To promote more women in the science, Saruhashi also started the Society of Japanese Women Scientists in 1958 with a  mission to have more women contributing to sciences and world peace.

“There are many women who have the ability to become great scientists. I would like to see the day when women can contribute to science and technology on an equal footing with men,” she once said.

Saruhashi’s first major contribution to the field involved a methodology to determine CO2 levels in seawater. She was the first to determine carbonic acid levels based on temperature, pH Level, and chlorinity. Today, oceanographers call this “Saruhashi’s Table”.

Her second major area of research was to quantify nuclear pollution caused by testing in the 1950s. She measured the amount of radioactivity in seawater and found that fallout from U.S. atomic tests in the Marshall Islands in the 1950s reached Japan after about a year and a half. Her findings on how radioactivity spreads helped led to restrictions on oceanic nuclear experimentation in 1963.

In 1981, Saruhashi founded the Saruhashi Prize, an annual award to recognize the research contributions of female scientists.

She died in 2007 of pneumonia.
